Navigating Brain Fog with POTS: Tips and Insights

Living with POTS and chronic fatigue can present a myriad of challenges, one of the most common ones I’ve experienced in my journey and through working with clients is brain fog. In this blog post, we will delve into brain fog, understanding its implications, exploring its causes, and most importantly, providing practical tips for navigating through it.

What is Brain Fog?

Brain fog is often described as a feeling of cloudiness in the head, as if you’re walking through a dense fog. It can manifest as difficulty remembering things, finding words, or maintaining focus. For individuals with POTS and chronic fatigue, brain fog is a common companion. However, it can also be experienced by those with chronic pain, high stress levels, inflammation, hormonal changes, fibromyalgia, gut disorders, and various other conditions.

The Connection to the Nervous System

Brain fog is not just a cognitive issue; it is a manifestation of dysregulation of the nervous system. A branch of our nervous system, called the autonomic nervous system, acts as a thermostat, responding to internal and external stimuli. When this system is dysregulated, it can lead to symptoms like brain fog and fatigue. Understanding this connection is important to help address and manage brain fog effectively.

Tips for Managing Brain Fog

Self-Regulation Techniques

1. Butterfly Hug and Rocking: Connecting both hemispheres of the brain through using both sides of the body in a gentle hug and tapping alternating sides while rocking can promote a sense of calm and grounding.

2. Breathwork: Practicing slow, lengthened breaths using the diaphragm at an equal inhale and exhale can regulate the nervous system and improve overall mental clarity. Working with a PT or coach can be helpful with this.

3. Recall Positive Memories: Pausing a few minutes to bring to mind regenerative emotions like appreciation, gratitude or love, helps restore coherent heart rhythms changing signals to the brain.

Physical Recovery Support

1. Balancing meals and Hydration: Maintaining stable blood sugar levels and adequate hydration keeps the body from shifting into a dysregulated state.

2. Diet and Gut Health: Identifying and addressing food sensitivities such as oxalates, histamines, gluten, dairy, soy, or corn and healing the gut lining and microbiome can reduce foggy days.

Movement and Exercise

1. Tailored Exercise: Finding the type of exercise that meets your body needs can improve blood flow, vascular tone, and overall energy levels helping mental clarity.

2. Mindful Motion: Participating in gentle exercise routines like yoga and restorative movement can promote physical well-being and mental clarity at the same time.

Environmental Factors

1. Allergies and Histamines: Understanding environmental triggers like allergies and histamine intolerance and identifying mast cells issues can help manage brain fog.

2. Light Exposure: Balancing exposure to natural light throughout the day and minimizing bright light in the evening can regulate the body's circadian rhythms which affect the brain.

Social and Emotional Influence

1. Energy Exchange: Recognizing how interactions with others impact your energy levels and cognitive function can help reveal key pieces for clarity.

2. Heart Coherence: Being mindful of the heart rhythms and emotional energy you emit and receive during social interactions can influence the clarity of your thoughts and emotions.

It’s helpful to take a holistic approach that addresses physical, emotional, and environmental factors when navigating brain fog with POTS. By understanding the intricate relationship between the nervous system and cognitive function, implementing self-regulation techniques, supporting physical recovery, incorporating movement, and considering environmental influences, you can take proactive steps towards managing and alleviating your brain fog.
