My Story:

Learning to Thrive with POTS & Chronic Fatigue

In 2012 my body started to fall apart. I was working full time as a physical therapist and came home so exhausted every day that I would fall asleep in the middle of my floor. I felt lightheaded and couldn’t think straight for periods during the day and struggled to keep up at work.

Multiple specialists couldn’t figure out what was wrong with me. I got so frustrated when some told me I was just a small and female. I figured it was the physical stress of my job getting to me, so I left clinical work summer of 2014 and started working on my PhD. When 2015 rolled around, I found myself in the parking lot of the university unable to remember how to get home and almost passing out in the car. Something was definitely wrong….

Thanks to deciding to see one more specialist, I finally learned what was wrong with me - POTS - Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome. Knowing brought relief. I finally knew what was wrong with me - Let’s treat it! Thanks to POTS, doctors connected some of my other symptoms to having a genetic disorder called EDS (Ehlers Danlos Syndrome). This combined with needing abdominal surgery hit me hard and I had to leave my PhD program.

Over the next few years, I returned to working as PT with a cocktail - medications, compression and lots of salt. I was exhausted all the time. My stomach hurt whenever I would eat. My friends and some of my family didn’t get it when I’d skip out on social events to stay home to nap.

I’d go to doctors hoping they could fix me - adjust my cocktail. I took time off to rest, but would just go right back to work and crash. Summer of 2020 came and I left my job worried about what would happen if I got sick. Funny thing happened, my POTS started getting worse not working and I got diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue. I was exercising and taking my cocktail but I couldn’t pinpoint what was crashing me.

I learned that my body and mind were stuck in an energy draining state. I realized that my medication cocktail and exercise weren’t enough. I needed to figure out what was triggering my nervous system to be in fight or flight. Instead of seeking to be “fixed,” I tapped into self-awareness to shift my nervous system into a calm, healing state. I started using biofeedback to figure out how to rebuild my energy and exercise without crashing.

All along I had had the resilience within myself to heal. Bit by bit, I got my energy - and my life - back.

This process helped me realized how important it is to take an integrated approach to healing. I craved to learn more about how to holistically support the mind-body connection and attended the Institute for Integrative NutritionⓇ Health Coach Training Program to become an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach.

My journey to getting my energy back made me passionate about coaching other women with POTS to help them regain their energy and get their life back.
