Cornucopia of Wellness: Part 3 Mindset for Movement Forward

A big part of forward movement has been changing my mindset. In the past working full time as a physical therapist, my mindset was to keep working until my body completely fell apart. My body did not agree with my mind. This lack of mind-body balance led to burnout multiple times. 

I changed my mindset after my third burnout. This was not easy. I had to let go, accept, and move forward spiritually, socially, and professionally to move forward. 

Spiritually moving forward involved exploring the teachings of Buddhism. There I found the acceptance, equanimity, and impermanence of suffering that I needed to process the changes in my life due to my health. I now recognize that mentally and physically blocking out how I feel is the opposite of moving forward. Admitting my feelings of overwhelm, anger, defeat, and exhaustion was not moving backward, but part of moving forward. Recognizing how I feel is part of self-awareness. By allowing my feelings to be present, examining them, and showing myself love and compassion I made movement towards wellness.

Movement forward socially required quite a bit of acceptance. I had to accept that some of my social connections and relationships had changed and that others will potentially change in the future based on my health. I made forward movement socially by gaining new connections with others on similar journeys to mine for support and guidance. In doing so, I have met some of my closest friends. 

Professionally, forward movement has been the most difficult. It was a challenge to let go of where and who I thought I would be and embrace where and who I am right now in this present moment. Forward movement came with my taking what seemed like a step backward, leaving my job as a physical therapist, to find balance in my life for healing. In doing so, I was able to move forward to find a new career path as a health coach.

By having a mindset of moving forward, I see that letting go and accepting my body and mind is an ongoing process. A process that is essential to finding balance and resilience for wellness.
